Dr. Seuss Enterprises recently promoted Nicole Gates to the role of senior corporate counsel, in which she will continue to lead and oversee matters relating to Dr. Seuss’ portfolio and manage legal affairs.
Gates has been with the company since 2018, when she joined as its first in-house counsel. In her current role she handles infringement issues, the company’s global trademark portfolio, contracts for entertainment and licensed product, and litigation matters. As a member of the company’s executive team, she provides counsel on issues related to the company’s portfolio, including Dr. Seuss books, films, TV shows, stage productions, exhibitions, digital media, licensed merchandise, and other strategic partnerships. Additionally, Gates drafts and negotiates license and content creation agreements, advises on disputes, and assists with day-to-day commercial transactions.
In the past year, Gates has been involved in organizing team engagement and return-to-work policies; she also works closely with DSE president Dr. Susan Brandt to implement the company’s business operations and administrative needs.
In addition to her new title, Gates was appointed secretary of Geisel-Seuss Enterprises, Inc. this year.
Gates graduated from the University of Virginia with a BA in art history before earning her Juris Doctor from USC’s Gould School of Law. Before joining DSE, she worked for law firms in San Diego and Los Angeles; she is also a member of the Association of Corporate Counsel.
“Over the past few years, Nicole has become an integral member of Dr. Seuss Enterprises’ leadership team and has provided invaluable legal advice and support,” said Brandt. “The promotion to senior corporate counsel is well-deserved and we are excited to see Nicole continue growing within the organization and take on this new role.”
