Thanksgiving Weekend Shopping Stats
This holiday shopping season moved full steam ahead starting, once again, on Thanksgiving Day and culminating on Cyber Monday. While brick-and-mortar stores don’t seem as crowded this year, consumers are certainly shopping but it’s from the comfort of their own homes.
Cyber Monday 2015 was the biggest day in U.S. online shopping ever. Here are some stats:
- E-commerce revenue was up 16.2 percent over Cyber Monday 2014
- Orders grew 14.7 percent and Average Order Value (AOV) was up 1.3 percent, indicating a less promotion-driven Cyber Monday than last year
- 26.9 percent of online sales were placed on mobile (phones + tablets), up from 23 percent on Cyber Monday 2014
- Over three quarters of all mobile orders (75.6 percent) were made on Apple devices, while only 24.2 percent happened on Android devices
- Email marketing was the primary channel driving online sales, accounting for 22.1 percent of transactions
- Social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest, etc.) only drove 1.5 percent of sales
For the full holiday weekend (Thanksgiving day–Cyber Monday), revenue growth over 2014 came in strong at 16.4 percent. The strong growth overall for the weekend was driven by mobile shopping (Apple devices in particular), email marketing, and Google search.
Here are the highlights for Black Friday 2015:
- E-commerce revenue was up 16.1 percent over Black Friday 2014
- Orders grew 15.6 percent over Black Friday 2014
- 36.1 percent of online sales were placed on mobile (phones + tablets), up from 30.3 percent on Black Friday 2014
- Email marketing was the primary channel driving online sales, accounting for 25.1 percent of transactions
- 77.6 percent of all orders made on mobile devices happened on Apple devices, while only 22.1 percent happened on Android devices
- Social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest, etc.) only drove 1.7 percent of sales
Here are the highlights for Thanksgiving Day 2015:
- 12.5 percent increase in e-commerce revenue
- 10.8 percent increase in e-commerce orders (transactions)
- Mobile shopping was 39.3 percent of online shopping, up from about a third (34.3 percent) on Thanksgiving 2014
- 78.3 percent of mobile shopping on Thanksgiving Day was done on iPhones and iPad devices. Android accounted for 21.5 percent of mobile online orders placed on Thanksgiving Day this year.
This data is based on The Custora E-Commerce Pulse, a free online dashboard providing U.S. e-commerce statistics and benchmarking data from 200-plus online retailers, 500 million anonymized shoppers, and $100 billion in e-commerce revenue.
10th Annual Digital Kids Conference During Toy Fair 2016
The Toy Industry Association (TIA) and Digital Kids Media announced that the 10th Annual Digital Kids Conference & Expo will once again co-locate with Toy Fair in February 2016 in New York City’s Jacob Javits Convention Center.
Taking place February 15–16, the Digital Kids Conference & Expo will provide toy industry stakeholders, brand owners, product developers, and content producers with the opportunity to strategize and collaborate on the future of connected smart play. Chats and lectures with experts in the fields of app/mobile development, children’s entertainment, and digital media will uncover digital strategies and solutions for reaching kids and families. Confirmed speakers include LEGO, Mattel, Spin Master, PBS Kids Digital, Wonder Workshop, PlayKids, Tinybop, Dr. Panda, Sphero, and Duck Duck Moose, among many more.
The conference will also unveil new research from BSM Media exploring key drivers that motivate mothers to say “yes” and buy certain brands, as well as the types of apps, games, and connected digital content and products that will appeal most to children in 2016 and beyond.

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Launches Live Show
The Fred Rogers Company and Mills Entertainment announced a full-scale musical production for Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, which is set to premiere January 15, 2016, at the Merriam Theater in Philadelphia and will make stops in more than 50 cities across North America. The production will feature performances for both school and public audiences. The live show features Daniel and his friends as they embark on an adventure through the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. The stage show features songs from the PBS Kids series along with several original musical compositions written exclusively for the live production.
