Spin Master Suing Crayola for Infringement
Spin Master announced that it has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Central District of California against Crayola and its intellectual property holding company, Crayola Properties, Inc. According to the complaint, Crayola knowingly, willingly, and unlawfully is infringing and intends to infringe on Spin Master’s Liv trademark (from its Liv line of dolls and the accompanying www.livworld.com website) by introducing its new Liv Crayola line of products targeted at young girls. Spin Master is seeking damages, attorney’s fees, and a permanent injunction barring Crayola from infringing on Spin Master’s Liv trademark.
A request for comment from Crayola was unanswered as of press time.
Techno Source to Bring Tetris to the Tabletop
Techno Source and Blue Planet Software, Inc., the company that manages the exclusive licensing rights to the Tetris brand, announced a licensing agreement that grants Techno Source the exclusive rights worldwide to develop both electronic and non-electronic Tetris tabletop games. Techno Source’s tabletop games, based on the Tetris video game, will be introduced at retail beginning in 2011.
Ludorum Hires Megan Buecher
Ludorum announced the appointment of Megan Buecher as director of licensing for North America. Buecher will oversee U.S. and Canadian licensing for Chuggington from Ludorum’s New York office. Buecher comes to Ludorum from United Media (UME), where she led the apparel and accessories business and assisted with retail development for children’s brands including Peanuts, Fancy Nancy, and Rainbow Brite. Prior to UME, Buecher spent seven years at Gullane and then HIT Entertainment managing licensing development for children’s brands such as Thomas the Tank Engine, The Wiggles, and Angelina Ballerina.
Sanrio Teams up with Dr. Martens
Sanrio, Inc., and Dr. Martens are teaming up for a new collaboration featuring Sanrio characters on exclusive limited editions of Dr. Martens 1460 eight-eye boot and Mary Jane strap shoe. The limited edition collection will hit stores beginning in September—just in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sanrio and to continue Dr. Martens’ 50th anniversary celebrations (which started on April 1).
All styles will be available in select Dr. Martens stores, Sanrio stores, and Nordstrom, as well as drmartens.com and sanrio.com. The 1460 eight-eye boot with the all-over print will retail for $165; the 1460 eight-eye boots with a 3-D bow and the Mary Jane styles will retail for $135 and $120, respectively.
Sally Bollywood Expands International Presence
Just six months after its debut on the global stage at MIPCOM 2009, Sally Bollywood is forging ahead with international deals.
In Spain, Sally Bollywood will air on Cartoon Network/Telecinco and in Portugal it will appear on Aquarius. These new sales are added to those already signed with Super RTL in Germany; Disney Channel in France, Germany, Italy, and French-speaking Africa; VRT and RTBF in Belgium; Noga in Israel; and Atlantic Pictures in Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia. Deals are also being finalised in the Netherlands and the Middle East.
Sally Bollywood is a 52 x 13 animated series that follows the investigations led by Sally, a young private detective whose inquiries are followed up around her school and the local neighborhood. Sally’s adventures are full of humor with a touch of spice and unfold against a colorful musical backdrop.
